the Boston Celtics have developed a reputation for breaking offensive records in recent years. Their 122.2 offensive rating from last season is the highest any team has achieved over a full campaign. They are on track to surpass records for both 3-point attempts and prosperous 3-pointers this season. The entire Joe Mazzulla era has been an exhibition of offensive prowess, but Wednesday showcased perhaps their most remarkable performance during this period.
Jayson Tatum, Jrue Holiday, and Kristaps Porzingis all rested against the Portland Trail Blazers, yet Boston still secured a 128-118 win over one of the NBA’s hottest teams. This was largely due to the outstanding shooting display from Payton Pritchard and Derrick White. Pritchard sank 10 three-pointers while White contributed nine, totaling an impressive combined count of 19. This sets a new NBA record for the most three-pointers made by two teammates in a game. While several teammate combinations had previously reached 18 threes,no duo had ever each scored at least nine in a single game until now with White and Pritchard.
The history of the NBA is meaningful, but considering Boston’s place within it,team achievements are nearly as remarkable. White and Pritchard established some of those records as well. Their combined total of 84 points marks the highest ever scored by two Celtics together, making them the first pair of Boston teammates to each score over 40 points in a game—Pritchard netting 43 and White adding another 41.
Additionally, they became the first duo in league history to score more than 40 points each while also hitting at least seven three-pointers apiece.
