Pete Carroll has transitioned from Seattle to Las Vegas, and Geno Smith is making the move alongside him. The Seahawks have traded the experienced quarterback to the Raiders in exchange for a third-round pick in 2025, as reported by CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones.
Financial considerations were reportedly one of the primary factors behind the seahawks’ decision to part ways with smith. The two teams were approximately $10 million apart during negotiations, according to sports Illustrated. Seattle aimed to extend Smith’s contract at around $35 million annually, while Smith’s representatives were seeking a deal worth $45 million per year. Currently, he is entering the final year of his three-year, $75 million contract and ranks as the 19th highest-paid quarterback based on average annual salary according to Over the Cap.
The Seahawks initially proposed trading Smith along with DK Metcalf to Las Vegas for pass rusher Maxx Crosby, but that offer was declined by the Raiders, as per SI’s report. Instead, Crosby signed an extension that made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.
At 34 years old, Smith played under carroll during his last four seasons in Seattle. A second-round draft choice in 2013 who began his career with the New York Jets, he served as Seattle’s starting quarterback for three seasons. He recorded a 28-24 record as a starter and helped lead his team to a playoff appearance in 2022. Having received Pro Bowl selections in both 2022 and 2023,he completed an impressive 70.4% of his passes last season.
with Smith on board, Carroll has secured an established veteran quarterback as he embarks on his inaugural season leading the Raiders. Though, while Las Vegas has found their next signal-caller, Seattle may need to search for their new leader at quarterback. Additionally, thay are also looking for a wide receiver after releasing veteran player Tyler Lockett .Metcalf has also expressed interest in being traded out of Seattle.

Sneak Peek: Raiders: B+
The fact that Carroll isn’t inclined towards lengthy rebuilding phases makes it logical for him to acquire an established veteran who can bring some level of stability back into Las Vegas. With Smith now part of their roster gives them a chance at competitiveness come 2025; based on current performance trends; it appears that there’s still quality football left within him. p>
Acknowledging that while he’s competent; it’s crucial noting he’s coming off a season where he threw fifteen interceptions—the highest since his rookie campaign—he isn’t necessarily viewed as long-term solution either so they might still consider drafting younger talent either this or next offseason if needed; especially since they hold sixth overall pick this draft which could be utilized elsewhere now they’ve secured Geno’s services instead! p>
Aging quarterbacks like Geno typically require solid support systems around them if they’re going maximize potential success levels moving forward—currently lacking such resources within Las Vegas means they’ll need successful offseason strategies implemented quickly! p>

Sneak Peek: Seahawks: C+
The question arises whether Seattle is initiating merely adjustments or embarking upon full-scale reconstruction? Nonetheless—they’ve opted towards changing course following moderate achievements witnessed under center with Geno leading offense thus far—but not only did they let go off him entirely but also parted ways one franchise legends Tyler Lockett too potentially losing another two-time Pro Bowler DK Metcalf soon thereafter! P>
Additionally concerningly enough—they lack comprehensive plans regarding future quarterbacks currently available options seem limited given Sam Howell holds just one year experiance starting games having been Commanders’ QB throughout all seventeen contests played last season where despite throwing twenty-one touchdowns completing nearly sixty-four percent passes regrettably led league interceptions tallying twenty-one times sacked sixty-five occasions too!
