Pipcorn’s tale began in 2011 when siblings Jeff and Jen Martin were packing up their Chicago apartment for a move. In search of a snack, they decided to grab the nearest food item that wasn’t packed away: a bag of heirloom popcorn. Jen had brought it home from the health-food store where she worked, but its unusual color might have made it seem less appealing compared to traditional yellow microwave popcorn kernels. Still, the Martin siblings were hungry enough to give it a try.
The results were remarkable. Despite popping surprisingly small,it turned out to be the most appetizing popcorn they’d ever tasted. They promptly wanted more but discovered that these kernels were hard to find. undeterred, they went straight to the source by locating the Indiana farmer who cultivated them.
Now with access to nearly unlimited supplies of heirloom popcorn, an idea sparked in the Martins’ minds: recreate that winning recipe and share their success with everyone else. To do this, they teamed up with Jeff’s wife Teresa, and together they officially launched Pipcorn.
Pushing through challenges
Certainly, coming up with a name and initial recipe was just the beginning.The founders faced meaningful challenges in getting their brand recognized and making people aware that their small yet transparent snack was exceptional. Driven by shared passion, they produced batch after batch from their home kitchens using simple tools like an old spaghetti pot while packaging servings in hand-stamped paper bags. They then secured spots at events such as Smorgasburg Market—new York City’s vibrant outdoor food festival—and set up an online store to deliver their products directly to customers.
The early days were long and often exhausting for them due to limited resources and fierce competition from both large corporations and smaller businesses alike.The financial strain on these budding entrepreneurs was considerable; at one point Jen even moved into her friend’s closet just to save money.
Blessings came when Oprah Winfrey herself took notice after one of her scouts sampled their snack; she reportedly fell in love with it and eventually included it on her list of Favorite Things—a true endorsement from someone influential!
