The privacy-focused messaging application Signal has been soaring in the Dutch app marketplaces over the past month, frequently ranking as the top downloaded free app on both iOS and Android across all categories, according to data from various app-tracking services like Sensor Tower.
The application has experienced spikes in popularity over time, often triggered by changes in policies at competitors such as WhatsApp or geopolitical developments. This is because Signal has established itself as a more privacy-amiable option — it’s run by a non-profit association (albeit one based in the U.S.) rather than a private company focused on data monetization. Additionally, Signal collects very little metadata.
In 2025, with a new U.S. president backed by Big Tech’s warm embrace,it’s not surprising that digital privacy tools are gaining traction — especially in Europe which has drawn President Trump’s ire.
Though, what stands out this time is Signal’s notable presence in one particular region — the Netherlands.
